Playstation acquires esports platform

One of the largest gaming platforms in the world, Repeat.gg has been acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment in an effort to grow their presence in the esports world.

Repeat.gg is one of the largest esports tournement paltforms in the world and allows users to play and compete for cash prizes across a variety of online games. The platform also organised esports tournaments that allow users to compete even when they aren’t online at the same time.

Having stated in a blog that: “Esports is for Everyone”, leading people to wonder why the company agreed to the acquistion. The platform allows people to play and be awarded on their performance, creating a large and rewarding space for players.

Their reasoning for allowing Sony to purchase them was due to gaining acess to more resources, game titles and technology. The Repeat team have also said that they have always aimed to grow the platform and this move will allow them to continue their mission to “become synonymous with esports by creating a home where everyone has a chance to compete and win.”

Although the paltform has been purchased by Sony who own PlayStation, Repeat still plans to supports other consoles and PC and mobile. Since the founding of the platform, Repeat has successfully hosted over 100,000 tournaments with over 2.3 million participants — this was likely one of the key reasons PlayStation was interested in acquiring the platform.

PlayStation have also claimed that their vision for esports has always been about breaking down barriers for gamers. Their goal is to expand the ways for players to engage in competitive gaming and explore more ways to allow people to compete at all levels.

The acquisition of Repeat.gg is the second major step forward in esports for PlayStation. Prior to purchasing Repeat.gg, PlayStation acquired the Evolution Championship Series, the largest fighting game tournament in the world. It is clear that Sony is aiming to become a leader in the esports industry.
